"Creative nonfiction" is a term that has come into vogue lately to describe the way nonfiction writers are pushing the limits of an ancient literary form - what is usually called the essay. Leslie Jamison, the editor of e Best American Essays 2017, writes, "e essay has always courted a reputation as a solipsistic genre, the mind fondling itself on the page. But to me, the defining trait of the essay is the situation and the problem of the encounter.e essay inherently stages an encounter between the "I" and the world in which the "I" resides; it models a certain way of paying attention, awesome, humble and suspicious all at once." is course will involve reading a dozen of these varied encounters from e Best American Essays 2018, with guest editor Hilton Als, the New Yorker magazine's longtime drama critic.
