A Message from the President The fall semester reminds me of that moment years ago when I first set foot on a community college campus in Philadelphia. As the first in my family to go to college, I was excited about the adventure and—at the same time—apprehensive about how to fit in to a new environment. I recall looking for students who were just as committed to college as I was. I found my sense of belonging in the classroom and with the variety of student life programming that my community college offered. At Howard Community College (HCC), many students find their own sense of belonging through robust honors offerings, like those featured in this issue's cover story. The college has had a long history of honors courses and programs to stimulate the intellectual curiosity of students. More than 25 years ago, HCC envisioned a unique honors program for recent high school graduates named after the founder of Columbia, James W. Rouse. With its success, HCC launched honors programs for students studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, as well as one that offers optimal flexibility for full- and part-time students. Honors programs are high-impact practices that offer students extraordinary experiences inside and outside of the classroom. As an institution committed to moving students toward the goal of graduation or transfer, honors programs have contributed to the college's sustained increase in the number of students receiving associate degrees and certificates. This issue also includes the annual giving report for the HCC Educational Foundation, Inc. (HCCEF), which is dedicated to funding pathways to success. The HCCEF and its many donors transform the lives of students and their families. I hope you enjoy this issue of Pathways. Thank you for your continued support of the college and its nearly 30,000 students. Best regards, Kathleen Hetherington, Ed.D.
