IN GIVING Becky Mangus, Rotary Club of Columbia Becky Mangus knows firsthand the impact that Howard Community College can have on a family. One of her sons enrolled in HCC's culinary program right out of high school, while the other was a transfer student to the nursing program, and both now work locally. With a professional baker and a clinical nurse coordinator in the family, Mangus jokes, "One can feed me and the other care for me when I eat too many treats!" As the program chair and past president of Rotary Club of Columbia, Mangus also witnessed the impact Howard Community College has had on her local club and community. Some Rotary Club members work at HCC, while others have family members who studied at the college. Almost all the members have attended events hosted by or at HCC. Both long time establishments in Howard County, Rotary Club of Columbia recently celebrated its 50-year anniversary, and Howard Community College will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2020. As Mangus notes, "We grew up in the community together, and we have seen how important HCC has been to the students in our county schools and the adult population." It's no wonder this Rotary Club has given to HCC for over 20 years. Rotary's philosophy of "Service Above Self" means they help fund and participate in a number of community projects, including annual donations to the Columbia Rotary Club-Briscoe Family Rouse Scholars Scholarship. "We've had Rouse Scholars we supported attend our meetings and speak about how it made a difference in their lives. We realize that many of the students we help would not be able to attend college without those funds," said Mangus. In addition to the scholarship fund, the Rotary also donated money for the on-campus musical playground and solicited a matching Rotary District Grant. The Rotary Clubs of Howard County Atrium in the Health Sciences Building got its name when all seven Howard County Rotary clubs agreed to an annual commitment over a five-year period. Rotary has a four-way test for giving that concludes with the question, "Will it be beneficial to all concerned?" The 20-year ongoing partnership between HCC and Rotary Club of Columbia provides the answer to that one: a resounding yes! Fall 2018 | Pathways 19 The Howard Community College Educational Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports Howard Community College by raising funds for student scholarships and programs. There are no administrative costs incurred, and 100 percent of gifts go directly toward the fund designated by the donor. To discuss how you can fund pathways for student success, call Executive Director Missy Mattey at 443-518-4208 or visit howardcc.edu/donors. WHY GIVE? "We realize that many of the students we help would not be able to attend college without those funds." — Becky Mangus
