If your classes meet at a Howard County 50+ Center, you will be requested to fill out an in- formation sheet for the Howard County Office on Aging and Independence. You will be issued a membership card (at no charge) that will be scanned to expedite your entrance to the center on future visits. History and Culture The Hittites NEW! e Hittites were one of the most prominent cultures to have inhabited the ancient Near East during the second millen- nium B.C. and are mentioned more than fiy times in the Bible. ey ruled over a vast area, covering most of modern Turkey as well as parts of northwest Syria. In this course, you will be exploring the fascinating history of the Hittites. You will examine their royal capital at Hattusa, which is located on the central Anatolian plateau and has yielded thousands of clay tablets written in cuneiform script detailing their interactions with Egypt, Assyria and Babylonia. You will discuss in detail the famous battle of Kadesh fought between the Hittites and the Egyptians under Ramesses II in 1274, which resulted in the oldest known written peace treaty; a replica of which is displayed in the entrance to the United Nations Security Council. Sicily's abundant fertility, celebrated in the local cults of Demeter and Persephone, and its position as the largest island in the Mediterranean, has for hundreds of years drawn the attention of Phoenicians and Ancient Greeks and Romans. In this course, you will discuss the fascinating history of Sicily in the Greco-Roman period while exploring the famous Greek temple complexes of Agrigento, Selinunte and Segesta. e well-preserved archaeological ruins of Sicily are on display at Agrigento at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Valley of the Temples. You will explore Taormina, famed for its Greek theatre and commanding position on a distant spur of Mount Etna, as well as Syracuse, one of the great city-states of antiquity. What Do I Pay? 60+ TUITION DISCOUNTS Maryland residents age 60+ receive a tuition waiver for many classes. Fees are not included. All classes will have a total course price listed, with the included fees listed beside it in parentheses. Courses that are not eligible for tuition waiver will be noted with either ** or the statement that there are no waivers. All course numbers that start with an XE are not eligible for tuition waivers. Unless otherwise noted, students age 60+ pay only the fees in parentheses. You must be 60 when you register for the class in order to receive the discount.
