One of the best comes from Lorrie Moore, a writer particularly known for her short stories: "A short story is a love affair; a novel is a marriage." Each year, the editors of the more than 200 American literary magazines that publish short stories send their top stories to compete for a spot in the Best American Short Story anthology. is year's guest editor is Anthony Doerr, the author of the Pulitzer-winning novel, All the Light You Cannot See. is course will meet every other week for six sessions and students will read and discuss two stories for each meeting, a total of 12. For the first class, students in all sections should read Our Day of Grace by Jim Shepard and Wrong Object by Mona Simpson. Lesser known, but every bit as accepted as part of the set of classic female detective writers of the Golden Age, is Ngaio Marsh, a New Zealander with British roots. e two of them follow the paths of the traditional Golden Age mystery with some interesting, and different, diversions. e first session of this class will be devoted to Agatha Christie and the second to Ngaio Marsh. You should read (or reread) the classic Christie, e Murder of Roger Ackroyd, and Death and the Dancing Footman by Ngaio Marsh. Both should be readily available at the public library if you do not wish to purchase them. You will discuss them as representatives of their genre as well as products of their individual authors.
