DEPARTMENTS <<< ADVANCEMENT IN ACTION BREAKFAST FOR CHAMPIONS OF COLLEGE The year 2012 was jumpstarted with HCC's annual Legislative Breakfast on January 3, bringing MOTIVATION FOR YOU AND ME together representatives from the college's student body, parents, alumni, trustees, and members By Joshua Trevino (HCC student) of the administration with elected officials representing Howard County in the Maryland General Assembly. Remarks from HCC President Kate Hetherington were followed with students and a parent sharing inspiring educational journeys and the critical role that government funding plays in paving these pathways to success. Speakers included student Carrie Bowers; Brenda Crowe, mother of current student Tyler and alumus Christopher (pictured below); and student Josh Today I am living as if tomorrow I will die… I will love, laugh and always cry… But with the shedding of silent tears may come frozen time So don't let these years pass us by… Trevino, who wrote and delivered a poem (featured here). Move forward when people hold you back, Attendees also watched a video profile of several students, produced by HCC-TV, highlighting Soar through the sky as one, the different paths each has taken to complete the common goal of educational advancement. Even if you can't keep your heart intact… Strive to be true and bold, And watch your life grow or even unfold… Capture those unforgettable memories, And frame them as a Van Gogh or a picture you see. SUPPORT = SUCCESS In February, student leaders from HCC and community colleges across the state traveled to Annapolis to meet with legislators as part of the annual Student Advocacy Day. Their message? Keep community colleges affordable. Cost is the biggest barrier hindering students from continuing their education, and legislators – through their continued support of community colleges – help make it possible for students to receive the quality education they deserve.
