The evening features a "rocket marketing" competition with students from an introductory entrepreneurship and creativity course pitching their business ideas. Each semester, I am struck by their enthusiasm and energy, their excitement about changing the world, and their commitment to discovering innovative solutions to meet our community's needs. Entrepreneurs make a critical contribution to the local economy. These risk takers look at the world in different ways, and they doggedly pursue new and improved approaches to benefit others – in the process generating business revenue and jobs. That's why, 10 years ago, when HCC's Commission on the Future asked us to develop an educational program for entrepreneurship, we responded with a holistic, individualized program that is attracting more participants every year. What do I mean by holistic? While we are helping students understand the steps they must take to launch and sustain successful businesses, we are also providing instruction that develops the life skills that will serve them regardless of their career path. Competency in leadership, analytical thinking, creativity, and oral and written communications – all of these skills are enhanced during participation in the entrepreneurial program. On the following pages, you'll read about current and former HCC students who have launched businesses and who continue to build on their dreams. Our students range from ages 18 to 65, include high school graduates and those with professional degrees, have decades of business experience and no business experience. What they do have in common is the passion for an idea and the dream of turning that idea into a business. We are proud to be on the leading edge of entrepreneurial education here at HCC, offering programs that help students change their lives so that they can change the world.
