Read Pathways online at howardcc.edu/pathways A Message from the President Walking around the campus of Howard Community College (HCC), you expect to find recent high school graduates working toward their associate degrees, but take a second look. Adult students ages 25 to 59 are choosing HCC to reboot, reinvent, or retool their careers. Not only can you get there from here, our students know that HCC helps you go further. I invite you to learn more through the student and graduate profiles in this issue. No matter where you are in life, the financial challenges of starting anew can too often stand in the way of a college education. Therefore, I am pleased that our Howard County students will benefit this year from the new, need-based Pathway Scholarship Program made possible by Howard County Executive Ken Ulman and the Howard County Council. Student Stacie Tippett is one of our recipients. Tippett left behind a career as a rehabilitation counselor to follow her heart and help children at an orphanage in Haiti. Now back in the United States, she has a new dream, with the Pathway Scholarship helping make it all possible. I encourage you to explore the photographic story of HCC's Center for Hospitality and Culinary Studies, which is one of only 15 programs in the country to be recognized by both the American Culinary Federation Educational Foundation and the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration. The expertise of our students and faculty is evident in their award-winning chocolate creations showcased at the Arc Chocolate Ball and the successful internships and employment opportunities available to students with area businesses. In the coming months, stay tuned for new construction at the college. We will break ground this November on the Science, Engineering, and Technology Building. Scheduled to open in 2017, it will provide much-needed facilities for students preparing for further study or future careers in engineering, cyber security, construction management, biotechnology, environmental science, and more. Finally, this issue of Pathways also features the annual donor report from the HCC Educational Foundation, which highlights the many generous community members, organizations, and businesses that have supported students along their pathway to success. Sincerely, Kathleen Hetherington, Ed.D., President q Dr. Hetherington joins HCC Educational Foundation member Chris Marasco, HCC trustee Kevin Doyle, student Anjole Williams, County Executive Ken Ulman, and County Council members Courtney Watson and Calvin Ball at the announcement of the Pathway Scholarship Program.
