CAMPUS AND HCC Receives NSF Grant Howard Community College recently received a nearly $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create a challenging and supportive scholarship program for students majoring in the sciences. Scholarship recipients will participate in an undergraduate research program and participate in a unique STEM learning community at HCC. The program features mentors, speakers, career exploration and planning, internship and community service, and cultural experiences related to the students' area of study. The National Science Foundation is committed to ensuring a skilled workforce for new and emerging STEM fi elds, as well as capable teachers to educate the next generation. HCC is proud to be a recipient of this generous grant. New Dental Hygiene Clinic The college's new dental hygiene program, launched in fall 2014, recently opened a clinic to offer low-cost teeth cleanings to faculty, staff, and other students. The clinic provides much needed hands-on experience for students. The plan is to expand the clinic to additional community volunteers in the fall. Students Benefi t from Pathway Scholarship Approximately 1,900 students have benefi ted from the Pathway Scholarship, the need-based scholarship program supported by a $2.5 million grant from Howard County government. The Howard Community College Educational Foundation is working to match a portion of the funds to grow the investment into $3 million for student scholarships. HCC President Receives National Award Dr. Kate Hetherington, president, has been named the 2014 Chief Executive Offi cer by the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). The national award recognizes her outstanding contributions and leadership. She received the honor after her selection as the ACCT Northeast Region CEO. ACCT is a nonprofi t organization of governing boards, representing trustees at community, technical, and junior colleges.
