HAPPENINGS Brian Curtis to Serve as Inaugural Keynote Speaker for Visiting Artist and Workshop Program Howard Community College's visual arts department is proud to announce that Brian Curtis will serve as the keynote speaker for its inaugural Visiting Artist and Workshop Program that will be held in early June. Curtis, an associate professor who serves as director of the studio art graduate program and coordinator of the drawing and painting undergraduate program at the University of Miami, will address the impact of art in society as part of the workshop series "Art Makes Meaning." His June 7 presentation will strive to help local artists build the skills, confidence, and passion necessary to create meaningful and inspired work, and will be followed by a week-long intensive drawing class. Curtis is the author of a successful drawing textbook entitled Drawing from Observation and holds a master's degree in fine art. HCC's Visiting Artist Program is supported by the Horowitz Center and the Howard County Arts Council, and is open to both student and community artists. Credit-seeking students may enroll in the Drawing II course. Community artists may register for the workshop to include Curtis' presentation, and/or the week-long drawing class. This summer, an exhibit will be unveiled, entitled "Blood Red," featuring the work of local and regional artists. Gallery Director Becky Bafford says "Blood and red are used in many different archetypal ways in art to show birth, life, or death, destruction, and pain. The 'Blood Red' exhibit gives artists the opportunity to examine the ways they use the color red in their paintings and in their sculpture and explore what it means in their work." Stonehenge Series III Nut (Egyptian), Oil on Panel, 40" X 60", 2014, Artwork by Brian Curtis My art is firmly rooted in the understanding that the primary success and value of a work of art is determined by whether the direct sensory perception of the work triggers a "mega-whallop" of satisfying intuitive pleasure in the viewer. Nothing more is asked, nothing less is expected. " " - Brian Curtis, keynote speaker for HCC's inaugural Visiting Artist and Workshop Program Spring 2015 | Pathways 17
