A Look Inside the SET Building To prepare students for the future, the new Science, Engineering, and Technology Building will be outfitted with innovative features to help foster the development of tomorrow's thinkers: • An engineering build room for students to collaborate on engineering projects. Features include a strong wall, ceiling crane, garage door, two-story open space surrounded by a frame structure, and second floor catwalk. • Digital fabrication and 3D printing lab, designed to contain computer-controlled manufacturing equipment. This equipment will include a three- axis computer numerically controlled mill for fabricating metal components, a professional grade 3D printer for rapid prototyping, and a laser cutter and engraver capable of producing precise flat parts from wood or acrylic. • Dedicated laboratories with research-grade instruments, including a cyber security lab. • Flexible space study rooms featuring multiple large flat-screen displays for collaboration, studying, working on projects, and small lectures. • Outdoor yard space for students to work on large projects, such as vehicles, structural frames, robotic swarms, and solar-powered systems. The building is also constructed with a host of environmentally friendly features, including a daylight sensing lighting system, room occupancy sensors, and low volume sinks. Heating and cooling systems will use high efficiency heat recovery and variable drive mechanisms to conserve energy, and LED lights will minimize electrical use. The goal is for the building to become LEED Gold certified, one of the highest certifications awarded for green buildings by the U.S. Green Building Council. 4 Howard Community College
