President Barack Obama called for free tuition at America's community colleges in his State of the Union address. Award-winning actor and director Tom Hanks recently wrote about his community college alma mater: it "made me what I am today." Author Rebecca Skloot recalled that she learned about Henrietta Lacks, the inspiration for her bestselling book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, at her community college. These stories remind us that today's Howard Community College (HCC) students may be similarly inspired to achieve international renown or give back to our community. This issue of Pathways magazine showcases the wealth of learning opportunities available to engineering students through clubs, hands-on labs, and collaborative work spaces. Even more is planned for the future. The college has started construction of a new Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) Building that will feature state-of-the- art laboratories, flexible classrooms, research and experiment spaces, and study areas to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and cyber security professionals. With growing demand for a well-trained and well-educated workforce, the new building will allow the college room to expand educational offerings. A sneak peek at the building renderings is on page 4. Also featured in this issue of Pathways is our award-winning Kids on Campus program, which offers week-long summer enrichment classes for elementary, middle, and high school students. With classes ranging from building workshops to hands-on physics and computer programming, there may very well be budding engineers or scientists who will one day attribute their success to HCC. As we are proud to say, HCC provides pathways to success… for all ages. Sincerely, Kathleen Hetherington, Ed.D., President Kathleen Hetherington Ed D Dr. Hetherington joins Howard County Senator Guy Guzzone, HCC Engineering Student Brianna Lawton, and HCC science, engineering, and technology division acting dean and chair Patti Turner at the HCC's Legislative Breakfast.
