10 Howard Community College
Engineering Students Benefit
from a Culture of Togetherness
When assistant professor and
engineering and technology department
chair Mark Edelen is asked what
sets Howard Community College's
engineering program apart from those
that are offered at other community
colleges in Maryland, he offers much
more than a reason – he provides a
list. Topping that list is the fact that
in addition to getting the quality
education they expect and deserve,
HCC engineering students earn real
world experience that readies them for
their future.
"We really focus on engineering
projects that are applicable to the real
world, and this makes education a
practical experience for each student,"
said Edelen. "We intentionally structure
class sizes to be small so that students
have a lot of access to the faculty.
We also ask the students for help in
creating the personalized learning
environment that they are here to
experience and want to be part of."
"The classes are smaller and more
personal at HCC," says Chris Iglehart
