On the northwest side of campus a new future for Howard
Community College is taking shape. Construction has begun
on a four-story, 145,300 square foot building that will house
the college's science, technology, and engineering programs.
Maryland and Howard County elected officials joined
college trustees, President Kate Hetherington, faculty, staff,
and students at a ceremonial groundbreaking last November for
the $76.7 million Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET)
Building. Funded by both the state and county governments,
the building is expected to open by summer 2017.
"Howard Community College is grateful to our state and
county elected officials for their investment in the college and
in the building, which will encourage students to connect,
collaborate, study, and discover," remarked Dr. Hetherington
at the groundbreaking ceremony.
The SET building will reflect the latest advances in
laboratory design and feature technology to enhance
academic program delivery. In addition to flexible classroom
spaces, there will be an outdoor classroom, and group and
individual study areas that encourage student interaction
and learning. An undergraduate research lab will spur
collaboration between faculty and students.
Maryland Delegate Frank Turner, house chair of the
Howard County delegation, who spoke at the ceremony said,
