SERVICES 99 others. There is short-term individual counseling, as well as crisis intervention, available to students who are struggling with a variety of issues. Personal counseling services are free of charge to HCC students. In addition, there are educational resources available on a wide range of mental health issues, as well as information and referral to community programs and services. CAREER LINKS Career Links is a retention program supporting low-income, displaced homemakers, single parents and single pregnant women. Mission The goal of the program is to retain and matriculate this student population on to economic self-sufficiency through education and retraining. Some students graduate with associate degrees and become employed; some students complete initial coursework and transfer to four-year schools to achieve bachelor and masters degrees; and other students use coursework to update their skills, certifications, and licensure and become employed in their career fields. To learn more about the program, visit howardcc.edu/ counseling. RETENTION SERVICES Retention Services provides comprehensive action plans that support students' intended educational goals. Action plans include exploration of majors and careers, discussion of transfer and graduation goals, early alert, referrals to resources, and follow up on academic progress. Retention Services is responsible for tracking and monitoring interventions within the college's academic policy. Students placed on academic warning, probation or suspension should meet with staff to formulate plans to improve their academic standing with the college. To schedule an appointment with Retention Services staff, contact the Learning Assistance Office at 443-518-1320. These offices are located in RCF 340. LEARNING ASSISTANCE CENTER Room RCF-340 443-518-1320 The Learning Assistance Center (LAC) provides free group tutoring & academic support services to all students enrolled in credit courses who would like to be more successful, efficient, and independent learners. Drop-in and scheduled tutoring sessions are available in most credit courses offered at the college during each major semester. The LAC will help with study skills, learning styles, time management, memory building, note-taking, and test-taking strategies. Drop-in help for writing assignments is available in the Write Room, located inside the LAC. Online assistance is available for writing assignments (howardcc.edu/ students/academic_support_services/ lac_and_tutoring/HOWL/Index. html). Tutoring, writing, and study skills software are available for use on computers.
