8 Howard Community College
How do you learn to trust your instincts and
make decisions? How do you become empowered
as an engaged and thoughtful citizen? How
do you become comfortable communicating
with people from other cultures? Students at
Howard Community College are learning about
themselves and their abilities to navigate the
world around them through participation in
academic enrichment programs: study abroad,
service learning, and global distinction.
A student traveling in a foreign country, who
does not speak the language and is not familiar
with the surroundings, must rely on intuition and
adaptability to make basic decisions about where
to go and what to eat. Students distributing food
at a local food bank through a Center for Service
Learning project are learning about hunger
