8 Howard Community College How do you learn to trust your instincts and make decisions? How do you become empowered as an engaged and thoughtful citizen? How do you become comfortable communicating with people from other cultures? Students at Howard Community College are learning about themselves and their abilities to navigate the world around them through participation in academic enrichment programs: study abroad, service learning, and global distinction. A student traveling in a foreign country, who does not speak the language and is not familiar with the surroundings, must rely on intuition and adaptability to make basic decisions about where to go and what to eat. Students distributing food at a local food bank through a Center for Service Learning project are learning about hunger Above, Beyond, and Outside the Classroom Walls
