Public Safety Wins National Award
Howard Community College recently won the national Safety Planning and
Leadership Award of Excellence from the American Association of Community

recognizes exemplary practices and innovation in campus safety and emergency
response strategies, programs, and procedures. Through its Safe Campus Initiative, HCC
practices a fully integrated approach to campus safety, with several committees working
collaboratively to focus on the health, safety, and well-being of faculty, staff, students,
and campus visitors. Howard Community College was one of four finalists.

Community College Students Advocate for Support
Students from Howard Community College and other
Maryland community colleges braved the chilly February
weather to meet with their state legislators and advocate for
community colleges. For students, Student Advocacy Day is
an opportunity to encourage funding support and stress the
importance of keeping community college affordable. Students
also share how community colleges changed their lives. In
his speech to fellow students, Akbar Tolbert explained the
day's importance, "Sharing our lives that are full of memories,
experiences, and dreams is beyond powerful."
