A Message from the President Howard Community College is educating more students and offering families the most affordable, quality higher education option in Howard County. This edition of Pathways magazine takes a closer look at the work the college is doing to prepare students for middle-skills jobs, which require postsecondary education but not a bachelor's degree. These careers are flourishing in the new economy and found in such industries as health care and cybersecurity. To help students connect to these careers, our Counseling and Career Services Center works with students to discover their aptitudes, and then connect them with internships and job opportunities that match their knowledge and skills. The new fire science and leadership program—developed in partnership with the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS)—is providing our county's firefighters and paramedics with additional education they need to advance in their careers. The program, highlighted in this magazine, started this spring with its first class of students. Like our partnership with HCDFRS, the college works hand-in-hand with local employers to connect them to students. Employers recognize the value of collaborating with the college, as they have experienced our students' commitment to learning, both as interns and as employees. Several employers have taken their support one step further by contributing to the Howard Community College Educational Foundation, Inc. as event sponsors or scholarship donors. Employers turn to the college because they recognize that an investment in the college is an investment in the community. An educated workforce benefits each one of us, and I am proud that Howard Community College is a key partner in ensuring the vitality of Howard County today and into the future.
