CONNECTIONS Fall 2016 | Pathways 15 On the Leading Edge Starting this spring, HCC will be the first higher education institution in the state of Maryland to offer certified nursing assistant (CNA) training through a combination of online instruction and in-person clinical practice. This hybrid curriculum, approved unanimously by the Maryland Board of Nursing, comes at an ideal time, as a growing number of learners who are in college or already hold academic degrees are interested in CNA training at HCC. "With this new format, we'll be able offer more flexibility and reinforce the technological skills required in modern health care settings," said Jennifer Bukowitz-Keller, continuing education nursing and allied health program director for HCC. "We began offering hybrid training in other health care professions last year, and have leveraged online and face-to-face teaching to achieve better learning outcomes." The new hybrid CNA course will join a growing list of hybrid allied health classes offered by HCC's continuing education and workforce development division: Advanced Patient Care Skills, Dental Assisting & Radiology, and Nurse Assistant for the Pediatric Office. These courses have been popular among learners, even those who were uncertain about taking a class with an online component. "We had a student who thought she needed a full classroom experience in order to successfully complete our Advanced Patient Care Skills course. Quickly, she discovered just the opposite," said Bukowitz-Keller. "The practical application in our face-to- face clinical setting supports online curriculum and the online portion of our courses is incredibly user-friendly."
