The foundation may help a struggling parent pay for classes and food for her family, or a recent high school graduate pay for books to pursue his dream of becoming a nurse, or a returning student pay for tuition while she takes a break from her job to pursue an even brighter future. The foundation funds pathways to success. In honor of this work, the foundation launched the Pathway Scholarship with the generosity of the Howard County Government. Since its inception in 2014, this scholarship has provided more than 2,200 students with much needed funding to continue on their pathway to success. Now I am asking for your support in helping the foundation match $500,000 of the county's investment, which would grow the Pathway Scholarship from $2.5 to $3 million total for student scholarships. The Pathway Scholarship has made a difference in the life of student Alethea Franklin, who will complete her bookkeeping certificate this December and then work toward her CPA certification. As a returning adult student, she has had to balance motherhood and her career with attending classes. From the beginning, her goal has always been to find a new career that will better support her and her son. The Pathway Scholarship enabled her to avoid loans, and as she explains, "Not having any additional student loan debt to finish my career goal has been the greatest gift ever." I look forward to your continued support of the Pathway Scholarship and the college's highly successful fundraising events— HCC 5K Challenge Race, Silas Craft Collegians Dinner, and Vino Scholastico. In FY2016, these events, combined with private gifts and employee contributions, led to the foundation reaching a fundraising total of more than $2.2 million. During this same time period, endowments, grants, and donations made it possible for the foundation to provide nearly $1.6 million in scholarships and program support to the college. The foundation achieves this level of success, thanks to the donors and the dedication of countless volunteers who serve on our committees, attend our events, and give of their time and money. With this FY2016 Donor Report, I am honored to thank everyone who contributed to the college and to our students. Through your generosity, HCC continues to provide students with pathways to success and build the future workforce of our community. Thank you for making an investment in Howard Community College and our students. Sincerely, Sean Keller Chairperson
