Building Buzz with Top Ranking Washington Monthly recently ranked Howard Community College as one of the nation's best two-year colleges for adult learners. This marks the first year that the Washington, D.C.-based magazine has measured two- and four-year colleges by their service to adult students. Howard Community College came in at number four on the list, with high scores for ease of transfer, flexibility of programs, and services to students. This news, the resulting Washington Post headline about the rankings ("Never mind the Ivies. Check out Howard Community College"), and the first week of fall semester classes kept the college's social media accounts buzzing. This year, those efforts have led to the college's first-ever Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship winners and the greatest number of Critical Language Scholarship recipients. The Gilman International Scholarship provides grants for undergraduate students of limited means to pursue academic studies or internships abroad. Recipient Duk Yong Shin traveled to Shanghai, Chengdu, and Beijing, China, with the Howard Community College China-Culture Study Abroad program, and he is now studying at the University of Maryland. Another recipient, Kareem Mack, studied with the Centro Studi Italiani School of Language, and has since transferred to pursue his passion for opera singing. Students Veronica Chinn, Tatsiana Horbach, Samantha Levine, and Vanesa Martinez-Chacon traveled to China as recipients of Critical Language Scholarships, which are sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's funded summer language and cultural immersion program.
