A Message from the President The close of this academic year will mark an exciting new beginning for science, engineering, and technology education at Howard Community College (HCC). By summer 2017, these programs will have a new home, a building designed specifically to educate students for jobs of the future. The Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) Building will provide innovative instructional space and modern advances in laboratory design. HCC's commitment to quality education remains constant, but now there will be greater opportunities for this area's future cybersecurity professionals, scientists, and engineers. I invite you to learn more about the building and its programs throughout this issue. Among the building's new facilities is an undergraduate research laboratory— the first space dedicated to student research at HCC. This is a remarkable space, where students will engage in research in their first two years of college. HCC's undergraduate research students are impressive, students like Kathleen Hamilton, who is working alongside faculty on original research in astrophysics. Hear from Kathleen and other students in the magazine. At a cost of $77 million, this exciting new 145,300 square foot building is possible because of the capital budget support the college received from the state and county. The community's support of the SET Building has also been outstanding. Donors have named rooms in the building and provided donations for scholarships to support students who face challenges reaching their goals of transferring or heading into the workforce. In the end, this building brought together faculty, staff, elected officials, government agencies, private donors, and businesses for one common goal: providing the best science, engineering, and technology education possible to students to ensure Howard County and the state of Maryland has the best workforce of the future. Best regards, Kathleen Hetherington, Ed.D.
