A Message from the President As May arrives, I am looking forward to my favorite time of year at Howard Community College (HCC)—commencement. As a proud community college graduate, I understand the sense of accomplishment and sheer joy that students feel when they cross the stage. Students undoubtedly had challenges along the way, but HCC is committed to helping them complete their degree or certificate. In this issue, Pathways examines efforts HCC has taken to increase college completion. The focus on completion has been a strategic priority at the college. Traditionally, community colleges have focused on bringing more students to higher education, encouraging access and opportunity. After I became president, I recognized that it was not enough to bring them here, we had to help them reach the finish line. It was time to do the heavy lifting. With a diverse population of students at varying levels of preparation, it is essential to reach students where they are and guide them toward success. In fact, completion is at the foundation of the college's mission—providing pathways to success. Why does completion matter? A 2017 economic analysis by Emsi found that graduates from HCC will see their earnings increase by $12,600 annually compared to someone with a high school diploma or GED. Over a working career, this salary increase amounts to $428,400. To build the workforce of the future, HCC will continue to focus on supporting students from application to graduation. In this issue, we explore HCC's innovative support systems to help students navigate barriers, data-informed decisions to better assist adults and working students, and creative solutions to promote internships and job placement. These efforts, and our ongoing focus on continuous quality improvement, ensure that we are building a better future for our students and our community. Best regards, Kathleen Hetherington, Ed.D.
