With a rapidly growing aging population, Howard Community College (HCC) is responding to the community need for well-educated nursing and health care professionals by providing students with real-world training opportunities during their study. Students have chosen to participate in a number of activities that are giving back to the community and— at the same time—building a healthier Howard County. This President's Day, the dental hygiene program hosted a special day for families through its on-campus Dental Hygiene Center. Children received teeth cleanings, x-rays, and a full range of services at no cost. The center allows students to practice their skills under the watchful eyes of a clinical dentist, and patient volunteers Giving Back to the Community from the community receive quality dental hygiene care that they may otherwise not be able to afford. The health sciences division partnered last fall with the Howard County Health Department to offer naloxone training on how to respond to an opioid overdose. More than 190 students, faculty, and staff received the training, making it one of the largest single trainings by the health department. Medical laboratory technician students held a Be The Match bone marrow donor drive to recruit new bone marrow donors, in response to the national demand for diverse bone marrow donors. Students' efforts resulted in 67 donors agreeing to be tested and a higher than expected turnout of interest from minority communities. Building a Healthier County 2 Howard Community College
