Funding Assistance Available Employment of heating, air conditioning, and refrig- eration mechanics and installers is projected to grow 15 percent by 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Commercial and residential building con- struction is expected to drive employment growth, and job opportunities for HVACR technicians are expected to be good. If you are interested in becoming an HVACR profes- sional or are currently employed by a licensed HVACR company, you can now train to become a licensed jour- neyman through our new partnership with the Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors of Maryland (HACC of MD), who has trained hundreds of HVACR techni- cians to work in the industry since 1996. is apprentice- ship program will train you to be an HVACR apprentice specializing in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning/ refrigeration systems. Work may include installing, servicing and repairing heating and air conditioning systems in residences and commercial establishments. Apprenticeships usually begin by assisting experienced technicians with such tasks as carrying materials, insulating refrigerant lines or cleaning furnaces. In time, you will move on to more difficult tasks such as cutting and soldering pipes and checking electrical and electronic circuits. e program takes four years to complete and includes a classroom portion along with 8,000 hours of on-the job training. Upon completion of the program, you will be eligible to receive your journeyman license from the State of Maryland without taking the exam. e HACC of MD has worked with hundreds of HVACR employers in Maryland to train quality employees. If you are employed by an HVACR company, your employer may help offset the costs for this program through a sponsorship. If you are currently not employed by an HVACR company, you can register and start the program and you will need to find full-time employment with an HVACR contractor by the start of your second year of classroom training. You may also audit the program through HACC of MD. Classes are held at Howard Community College for two evenings per week September through April.
