The PNC Foundation awarded HCC a grant of $11,000 to help fund the playground upgrade and enhance the early childhood education program. Additional support for the project was provided by Harkins Builders, Columbia Association, Horizon Foundation, Design Collective, Rotary Club of Columbia, and District Rotary Grant. "We believe these projects provide a rich learning experience in which students are learning engineering in an authentic real-world context," said Mark Edelen, chair of engineering and technology. "There are some lessons about the design process and project management that simply cannot be learned any other way." Alumna Succeeds in Classroom and on the Field Brittany Wartman is the personification of an accomplished student-athlete. During her two years at Howard Community College, she was focused and flexible, with an outstanding work ethic and excellent time management skills. "I was always taught to do my best," she said. "My parents provided motivation for me, but not any pressure. My teammates also pushed me to do my best." Wartman was one of only three student-athletes to win the 2018 Post-Graduate Scholarship from the Maryland Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, and the only recipient from a two-year institution. The scholarship recognizes student- athletes for superior work on the field and in class. On the field, Wartman excelled as a triple threat, playing soccer, lacrosse, and basketball. She is one of only a few student-athletes to play three different sports in one academic year. In soccer, she was chosen as an All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. While playing lacrosse, Wartman helped the women's team win the Region XX championship and advance to the NJCAA national championship game. In basketball, she was picked as the HCC defensive player of the year. In the classroom, Brittany excelled as a member of the prestigious Rouse Scholars program, through which she received a scholarship. In May, she was announced as HCC's Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and graduated with an associate degree in social sciences. This fall, Brittany is attending Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she is playing lacrosse and pursuing a career in social work. Outside of the classroom, Howard volunteers his time to counsel men battling addiction and homelessness in Baltimore. He sees humility and service to others as the keys to overcoming life's challenges. "Retaining the humility necessary to work through any learning curve will afford you the benefit of true academic excellence the rest of your life," explained Howard when reflecting on his recent award. "A life dedicated to the service of humankind is the surest way to fulfill yourself personally and ensure lifelong growth." Fall 2018 | Pathways 3
