Everyone has an opinion about art and the answers are never black and white. is course will explore the motives and symbolism behind some of history's most commonly misunderstood art movements including Dada- ism, Abstract Expressionism, and Minimalism. You will also examine some of today's biggest controversies surrounding the creation, criticism, and collection of art. What kind of feelings and meaning are the artists trying to convey? Are symbol and design patterns represented in every piece created by a specific artist? If so, how are they found? Join artist Kara LaRose to examine works of art from the Renaissance masters to contemporary artists. Many artists plan their initial concepts by sketching with pens, but intricate and expressive illustrations can also be created using pen and ink as the sole medium. Many of the most famous modern artists, including Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, experimented with pen and ink throughout their careers. Pen and ink is still commonly seen in comic books, medical illustrations, and fantasy drawings, dem- onstrating this medium's versatility. In this course, you will learn the basics of pen and ink with particular focus on mark-making, use of line, composition, and contrast. Sandy Lundahl, MPH, MA, a doctoral student in gerontology at the University of Maryland, will explore how aging affects every part of the body and will dispel many of the most persistent aging myths. In this course, you will explore mistaken age-related assumptions and thought processes that inform what you say to yourself and others. Become aware of cultural stereotypes that affect behavior and healthcare. Topics include the latest research findings in learning, memory, problem-solving, and more.
