<< DEPARTMENTS CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Six HCC students and two faculty advisors spent a part of their winter break in the Dominican Republic volunteering with the Orphanage Outreach nonprofit and teaching English to disadvantaged children. Exercise science major Kwame Ritter's experience was an eye opener. "The kids take nothing for granted," he said. "They taught me even more than I taught them." This was the 11th "alternative break" trip organized by HCC's Center for Service Learning and the first to travel outside of the U.S. The center has been recognized for four consecutive years by the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. AWARD-WINNING TV HCC-TV, our arts and educational access channel, is winning so many awards, it's hard to keep count. Last year, the college's studio won two international Ava gold awards and two honorable mentions, three silver Davey awards, five EMPixx awards, two Telly Awards, and two Summit International Awards. Congratulations to producers: Margaret Kahlor for "In Focus: Howard Community College," a new program hosted by HCC president Kate Hetherington; Carl Merritt for "Travels with My Aunt"; Karen Vadnais and Rebecca Jessop for "CineMaryland"; Vadnais and Janelle Broderick for "In the Spotlight"; and Matt Stovall for "Dragon's Lair Update."
