HAPPY 40TH! Birthday cake, bell-bottoms, and tuxedos were part of HCC's 40th birthday celebration. In October, students, staff, and faculty shared games and cake and gave a big thank you to Dr. Edward Cochran, member of our first board of trustees, who was awarded the James Clark, Jr. Medal. "Dr. Cochran envisioned the significant role a community college would play in the economic development of the county," said Kathy Rensin, chair, HCC Board of Trustees. Dr. Hetherington is joined by current Board of Trustees Chair Kathy Rensin and former trustee Dr. Edward Cochran at the college's 40th birthday party. ETHICAL HACKING? HOMEGROWN HINDI When HCC instructors couldn't find a stimulating textbook to teach the Hindi language to high school students participating in the college's STARTALK summer World Languages Program, they created their own. The engaging new book features language and culture centered around six students on a virtual tour of India. Bhaarat ek yaatraa Hindi, an official language of the Republic of India, was identified by the U.S. government as a critical language for more Americans to learn. Thanks to program director Cheryl Berman, author Ruddhi Wadadekar, and designer Brittany Wesselhoff, this learning is happening at HCC. Whether it's on the playing field or in cyberspace, the best offense is often a good defense. With that in mind, HCC's continuing education division is offering new courses in how computer hackers operate in order to prevent, detect, and respond to attacks on computers and networks. These hands-on, noncredit courses will begin this BIG WINS FOR SOCCER DRAGONS spring at the Gateway campus and Women's and men's Dragon soccer teams scored a championship season this fall. Coach Kate Seagroves' women defeated the number one seed in the nation en route to a fourth-place finish at nationals. Coach Stefan Draganov's men were undefeated in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference and won the Region XX championships, defeating Anne Arundel in the finals.
