<< DEPARTMENTS ADVANCEMENT IN ACTION STUDENTS SPEAK OUT HCC students and staff with Delegates Shane Pendergrass, Frank Turner, and Guy Guzzone. HCC students met with state legislators in Annapolis at the annual Student Advocacy Day on February 9, requesting support for Maryland's community colleges. They joined representatives from the state's 16 community colleges to urge lawmakers to approve the Governor's proposed 2012 fiscal year budget. Students discussed the benefits that community colleges offer, including educating 500,000 Marylanders and awarding 12,000 associate degrees and program certificates annually; charging low-cost tuition; teaching career-oriented classes; retraining those who are currently employed for advancement or career changes; and preparing people out of work for new opportunities. BENEFITING NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS Dr. Ben Carson, renowned neurosurgeon and author, will speak to guests at an elegant event to be held at the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center on June 4. The McCuan Nursing Scholarship Benefit is hosted by HCC and Jill and Pat McCuan, major benefactors of the college, and will raise funds for endowed scholarships for the nursing program at HCC. Growing up poor in a single-parent home, Dr. Carson was challenged by his mother to strive for excellence. Today, he is director of pediatric 26 Pathways | Howard Community College Spring 2011 neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees and is a winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In addition to a talk by Dr. Carson, guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, dinner and open bar. Event tickets are $125 per person.
