PRIVACY OF STUDENT RECORDS HCC protects the confidentiality of student records by complying with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act [FERPA] of 1974 and its amendments. Student records contain information directly relating to a current or formerly enrolled student and are maintained by the college or a party acting on behalf of the college. HCC may not release personally identifiable information in education records or allow anyone access to those records, unless the student has given written consent for the release of records or there is an exception as defined by law. Visit howardcc.edu/ferpa for more information. DIRECTORY INFORMATION Directory information is student record information that is generally considered not harmful or an invasion of privacy if released. FERPA allows the HCC to release student directory information which is defined as follows: names, addresses, email addresses, photographs, phone numbers, high school attended, areas of study, enrollment dates, degrees, honors and awards, or a lack thereof, participation in officially recognized college activities or sports, and athletes' weight and height. FERPA allows the release of directory information without student consent. However, the college generally releases only the following information: names, high schools attended, dates of enrollment, areas of study, degrees, and confirmation of honors and awards or a lack thereof. You may request that your directory information be withheld by submitting a written request to RRVA. RECORDS INSPECTION AND CHALLENGE In order to inspect and review these records, you must submit a written request to the registrar. Requests for inspection and review shall be granted as soon as possible, but no later than forty-five days after the date of request. Documents or files may not be altered or removed by the student, and requests for copies other than official transcripts will be denied. You have the right to request amendment to education records that you consider to be inaccurate, misleading or otherwise in violation of your privacy rights. CHANGES TO STUDENT RECORDS You are responsible for any and all actions taken on your student record; this includes updating contact information, initiating registration and registration changes, submitting coursework, and making payment arrangement. All accepted changes to the student record will only be initiated by you in writing or through myHCC. Students are not permitted to share your usernames or passwords to college- assigned accounts to ensure that your identity remains both protected and authenticated.
