HOROWITZ HAPPENINGS Horowitz Center Celebrates Ten Years of Creating and Achieving The Peter and Elizabeth Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center opened at Howard Community College in late 2006 and quickly became a cultural hub for the citizens of Howard County. This fall, the center kicked off its tenth anniversary season, celebrating the more than 360,000 patrons who have attended events at the Horowitz Center and more than 80,000 students who have taken classes as part of the Arts and Humanities Division. "The arts teach us how to dream," said Valerie Lash, dean of arts and humanities. "This year marks the tenth anniversary of dreams coming true in the Horowitz Center. We are celebrating a decade of creating and achieving." Lash says that it's important to reflect back on the impact the Horowitz Center has had on students and the community, since its opening ten years ago. As an educational and production venue, the center features state-of-the-art instructional facilities, three performance venues and two art galleries, giving visual and performing arts students and faculty tremendous resources, as well as the ability to host professional performances and exhibits. 20 Howard Community College 2015 / 2016 OF THE Horowitz Center's Seasonal Theme to Honor Female Artists Each year, the Horowitz Center at Howard Community College announces a theme that guides the planning and scheduling of key performances and events throughout the year. In 2015-2016, the center will focus on female artists who have shared their perspectives for generations, and deserve to be credited for their outstanding contributions in a field that is traditionally dominated by men. "Year of the Woman" will examine and share the narrative of a woman's life, and how it has evolved across time and culture through song, movement, imagery, and the written word. Throughout the season, the untold stories of women from the past and female voices today will be heard through music, theatre, dance, film, poetry, and the visual arts. All performances will explore what defines a woman and the contemporary views that will impact generations of women to come. Introducing "Year of the Woman"
