In this course, students will develop the listening and speaking skills needed to succeed at a US college or university. Class work will consist of pronunciation practice, listening activities, small group and class discussions of selected readings and lectures, oral presentations, and simulations of aspects of academic life. If students place into both a reading and writing course, they are required to take ENGL- 085. Students can be exempted from this requirement by passing an oral exam. Students placed into ENGL-083 AND ENGL-084 must complete both ENGL-083 and ENGL-084 before taking ENGL-085. Books not included. Develop your speaking and vocabulary skills in these four-day-a-week intensive classes during the month of January. For four weeks, concentrate on real, everyday spoken English. Develop confidence while you practice speaking in an active, fun environment. Expand vocabulary daily by learning and using new words and expressions. Includes dialogues, pair work, vocabulary development, and pronunciation tips. Content and complexity increase with each level. Are you looking for a job or starting classes but you're scared to use a computer? Start at the beginning and learn about the computer and word processing in clear, easy-to-understand English. This course is for native speakers and high beginning or above ESL speakers – anyone who wants a slower pace and more practice time. This course provides a highly interactive, critical thinking experience to help students understand themselves as independent learners, successful workers, and civic/global citizens. Through self assessment, reading, writing, and reflection, students will develop habits of mind necessary to engage in academic inquiry, creative and critical thinking, and scholarly discourse with integrity and civility; develop the ability to articulate long-term goals as related to beliefs and values; and strengthen the capacity to appreciate diversity and effective intercultural and interpersonal communication. Books not included.
