howardcc.edu/ConEd 443-518-1700 Winter 2018 27 Health Care Pharmacy Technician Training Theory and Externship In less than a year, you can be ready for a new career as a pharmacy technician under the supervision of pharmacists in a retail pharmacy, hospital, clinic, home health care set- ting, mail order or pharmaceutical wholesalers industry. is course meets Maryland Board of Pharmacy regulations and upon successful completion of this training you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy and to sit for the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. is course will cover pharmacology, pharmacy law and ethics, retail and hospital pharmacy, and compounding and IV admixture. Pharmacy math, systems of measure, and per- forming calculations based on body surface will be a major focus throughout the course. Key elements of professional- ism, employer expectations, and work ethics in a pharmacy setting will be covered, in addition to required off-campus pharmacy shadowing and/or practicum assignments prior to the externship placement. An externship performing daily pharmacy technician tasks consisting of 160 hours at local area pharmacies is required to complete this class. Externship eligibility is in part dependent upon a criminal background check and drug testing. Students with criminal records should check the PTCB to determine eligibility for certification at PTCB.org. Prerequisite: a high school diploma or GED, at least 18 years in age, knowledge of basic math (principles of algebra), good communication and interpersonal skills, basic computer data entry skills, and must have no criminal record. Purchase textbooks before first class. (T) Total eory-140 hours, Pharmacy Externship-160 hours (which includes a minimum of 20-25 hours per week during externship placement).
