In this course, you will examine the trial and death of Socrates by examining the four dialogues of Plato: Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo to see what (if any) lessons the ancient event relates to our present time. Plato was a devoted disciple of Socrates and his account lives on as tragic drama of the highest level. Since its accidental discovery in the 18th century, Pompeii has inspired archaeologists, artists, writers, and tourists to re-imagine life in a Roman city 2,000 years ago. In this course, you will examine how the ancient inhabitants of Pompeii lived in the shadow of a mountain that nobody knew was an active volcano. You will discuss the exciting discovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Explore ancient urbanism, domestic and public spaces, politics, entertain- ment, slavery, and the life of the rich in their spacious villas on the Bay of Naples, all ending in the final catastrophic moment of the cities' destruction.
